so it’s passover which symbolizes the start of spring to me. i clean out my pantry and fridge, and that’s when my gardening starts.
it’s the time of year my kids are off from school and i can get them involved and teach them about growing our own veg and how to plant seeds. we talk a lot about what we will be eating this summer and how long it takes until we can start eating our own veg and using our own herbs.
i’ve always had a green thumb, i love plants. i love planting. i have had my own veggie garden since i was a little girl. i even had a small veggie garden in the city. when we moved here it was the first thing i did, even before i unpacked boxes. can you feel the passion?
this year we went a little crazy. i took the kids with me and they were pulling pots off the shelf and throwing them in our wagon. they asked me a tons of questions and smelled everything. j was so excited he was eating leaves off of the seedlings (i just couldn’t stop him, it was to cute). then we went on a hunt for seeds. now j nor p can read, i sat on the floor and they went over every seed. “look ma, it’s (fill in the blank)”. this went on for about 10 minutes before i stood up and went to work. i kind of like to sit back and see what is available and plan things out in my head. not only did we get already started herbs but we also planted a ton of from seed.
herbs this year:
- rosemary
- thyme (both regular and lemon)
- lemon verbena
- chamomile
- curry
- lemongrass
- mint
- tarragon
- dill
- cilantro
- oregano
- parsley
- basil
as well as our already started herbs we planted seeds. a lot of seeds. i always over do it because sometimes seeds don’t sprout. i wanted to share a product with you that i adore. we found it last year and it was amazing. not only did i walk over to it 30 times a day but jack was amazed by it. he would check it out every chance he got.
this is a jiffy professional greenhouse. you can find them in nurseries all over. i got mine for about 10$. well worth it, plus, you can save it for the next year and buy refills (this would of happened for us but stella was teething). it comes with a cover. all you have to do is plant your seeds and keep it watered. i use a spray bottle and spray once a day (always make sure the lid is wet). within days you see results. just one day after we planted our seeds we had sprouts coming up.
just so you get an idea of what we planted from seeds:
- rainbow carrots
- lettuce (2 different kinds)
- watermelon radishes
- heirloom tomatoes (ranging from grape to burgundy)
- 2 types of cucumbers
- lima beans
- peas
- purple string beans
the list goes on!
i will keep you informed of our progress we are all very excited here and can’t wait to cook with all our fresh spices and veg.
I am so jealous of your gardening abilities. My grandmother, mother and sister can grow things like this without hardly any effort, but I almost always kill what I plant without even trying – even Rosemary!! Black thumb right here. It hasn't stopped me from planting more rosemary, basil, sage, parsley, mint, tarragon, and dill, but sadly, the dill has already bit the dust! Everything else seems to be doing okay though. Fingers crossed!
if it makes you feel any better amber, the dill i picked up, not doing so well it just started leaning today and the leaves are turning yellow. need some more sunny days, what is up with all this rain!
thanks for the comment! love your blog, great recipes:-)
