like many of you, dinner time in our house involves the kids sitting at the table and me taking that rare 10-20 minutes or so to clean, feed the dogs, do the dishes and catch up on whatever i neglected to do during the day.

the weekends however are a different story. weekends are all about family dinners. the only time we are all together. it’s the only time we can all sit, talk, eat and laugh. it’s turned into something special here. something that my kids look forward too.

the fist question i usually get asked when the kids notice that dad is hanging around all morning is, “is it the weekend!” (see summers do that to kids, they have no idea what day it is)? it’s usually followed by hysterical laughter and screaming followed by what’s on the menu? can we help? are you making dessert?

everyone pitches in, everyone helps in any way they are able to. the girl mixes, the boy measures, the husband cooks the meat. it’s a nice moment that brings us together. there is laughing, there is usually a huge mess, but hey, we have a good time, and that is all that matters.

so family dinners are all the rage here…family dinners, sunday dinners, any dinner where we all sit down together. we get to enjoy a good meal and finally get that family time we have been craving all week.

bbq’d sesame chicken

this is an old recipe that was posted before my migration to wordpress. it somehow got lost in the shuffle. it’s not new, but it is improved, because that happens.

  • 8 tbl sesame oil
  • 8 tbl honey or agave
  • 6 tbl GF soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sriracha
  • 4 tsp rice wine vinegar
  • about 8-10 chicken wings
  1. in a measuring cup or bowl measure out and whisk the first 5 ingredients.
  2. add your chicken to a zip lock bag or a big bowl (bags work better to distribute the ingredients) and cover chicken with the marinade. refrigerate for at least 4-6 hours.
  3. before you are ready to bbq, take chicken out of the fridge and let rest for at least 15 minutes. heat up your bbq and start cooking.

for some extra color and heat i like to throw some chopped pickled jalapenos (recipe to come) over the cooked chicken as well as some sesame seeds. serve with corn, salad or rice and enjoy.
