chicken soup…i love chicken soup, and when you’re sick it’s really the best medicine. i love that once upon a time we actually used herbs and food as medicine. like ginger - not only does it help nausea but also aids your body in digestion. did you know papaya works wonders for heartburn or that watercress helps your body rid of mucus (good to know right)? It always amazes me that food really is the best medication.
why do you need to know this? you don’t. you might though, and i bet someone out there knows of some really good remedies. i am suffering yet again from…yes, a sinus infection. good stuff. no home remedies will solve this one but they might however be of some help. i started out by making my usual go to recipe for stock. yes, my mother (and hers) both made chicken soup when you got sick. it’s jewish penicillin. add a matzah ball and you were quickly on the mend. not this time, a matzah ball wasn’t going to help. so i went back to my basics of herbs and foods that would make some difference.
should i mention to you before i go on that…um….ok fine, i started my chicken soup, went to lay down and then realized 2 hours later i forgot to take the ‘gizzard’ bag out of the chicken yay, go me! so i ran out to the store and grabbed a box of stock and started over. ssshhhh, don’t tell anyone
so tonight was just going to be chicken soup with some noodles, some toast and some tea. my son, who likes to sit with me while i am online, saw the the pioneer woman’s blog and asked me to make the tortellini soup. he has good taste. the recipe originated from the well fed newlyweds. great idea for soup, right. who doesn’t like cheese stuffed pasta — then add chicken soup and you’re set. i changed it up a bit, added some more veg and some ginger and watercress instead of spinach to help me a little great recipe! everyone loved it and i felt a lot better after 2 bowls.
ginger, watercress, and tortellini soup (adapted from the the well fed newlyweds, tortellini soup)
- in a large stock pot, add about 2 tbl of olive oil and saute onion, leek, garlic, carrot, ginger, parsley, and celery. let it sweat out for about 5-10 minutes.
- add wine to de-glaze the pan, stir and let it cook for about a minute. add your stock and tomatoes, bring it to a simmer and cook for about 45 minutes or so or until carrots are soft.
- bring to a boil and add tortellini. right before tortellini is done, after about 3-4 minutes, add your watercress.
- laddle into a bowl and enjoy.
if you do not favor watercress you could of course add spinach or for that matter any type of green you want. leave out the ginger too if you want, i thought it added a nice little bite, it settled my stomach and i was able to finally eat a meal, 2 bowls
enjoy and stay warm!
looks good for a cold day!
Thanks for another great recipe.
love the soup but check this out: get raw honey at trader joes or whole food. some lemon some garlic some ginger and some cayenne. put about 1/2 a cup of raw honey in a mug. squeeze 1/2 to full lemon into the honey (some people use a lemon that they have boiled….it is said to take away some enzymes that make the mixture less effective, I boil it if I have time and don't when I don't) Mix well. Whack a couple of cloves of garlic and a couple of chunks of ginger. Throw it in there but leave the pieces big enough to avoid when you spoon out the honey lemon mixture. Use 1 tsp at a time a as a cough remedy. Now if you have a really sore throat, take the same mixture and put about two tablespoons worth into a different mug. Add about 1 tsp of cayenne. Top with boiling water and if you want a teabag of any sort. Let it steep and cool to a comfortable temperature. Drink it fast. Your throat won't hurt anymore. So it's not FOOD, but your fabulous recipe made me want to YENTA about this! I really think the cayenne potion will help clear your sinuses and the pain too.
Sorry can't help you with any remedies for a sinus infection.
And I have learnt from experience to keep chicken soup frozen for my next cold, no one will make it for me when I am lying dying in bed.
Thanks for your recipe, sounds nice and comforting, can soup sound comforting? Well it does, feel better.
soup can def be comforting not when you forget to take that plastic bag of innards out however
just as i was making a pot of tea i was alerted to your comment. i was going to post my favorite tea recipe tonight, i usually make it when i am feeling under the weather. it includes ginger, lemon juice and rind, green tea leaves and raw honey good for a tickle in your throat, not to mention tasty and refreshing. i have heard of the pepper and garlic, not sure if my stomach can handle that right now though.
thanks for the well wishes! i am starting to finally feel better.
