we have cooked a lot this past weekend. the storm and all…we were trapped and there wasn’t much else to do. we were very lucky, little water in the house and we kept our power. none of our tree’s fell, which i was very thankful for, unfortunately there were others who weren’t as lucky as we were.
i don’t get to watch the news a lot but what i have seen of the aftermath is just awful. being a born and raised ny’er i have mostly been concentrating on what has been going on here. upstate ny, about 2 hours from here got hit really hard. here is a link to just some of the destruction (here). there are so many people who lost everything and i feel like i am not doing anything to help anyone. honestly, i am not sure what to do, and then i found this.
as many of you know i am a huge beekman 1802 fan. i am a fan on fb and i follow their website/blog all the time. i don’t know josh and brent but i love them. what they do for their community and their surrounding area is amazing. they brought life back to sharon springs (there was life there before, they just put the town on the map). unfortunately schoharie county got hit really hard. some towns were lucky but some, not so much. on their emails and fb page they are asking people to donate to:
this is a real great way to donate to the farmers who need your help. they are the ones who are at your farmers markets and the ones who make your milk and cheese. so if you have a couple extra dollars and you want to donate, please do so.
if you know of other donation sites please feel free to post a comment here and let everyone know (the destruction is up and down the coast, any donation site is welcomed).
stay safe everyone, our thoughts are with you.
I am in Northern New Jersey and our town was hit with floods and fallen trees (many still without power) and the main thing here is think local! Shop at your local stores. Yes, they are more expensive but we all need our local stores and farmers to still have jobs, without them there is no town. Think about local food banks, ours is asking for gift cert for clothing and back to school supplies for all the children, and hardware store supplies to help with clean up. One of our stores sold imported meats from Italy lost about $100K in food and equipment. The locals hung signs in their window saying we love you and please come back. Many of us pledged to shop local on their first day coming back from the flood.
Our Main Street has never been busier!
thank you for sharing melanie. do you have any local information for people to donate to?
Just find a town that you may care about and call their Social Services Department and ask how can you give. If you have no clue Red Cross is accepting donations. All of us in my town (Denville NJ) are working together and its really amazing what everyone can do. But there are many towns worse than ours that need help. Wayne nj hasn't recieved any help from their local gov, Hunter Mountain resort town (in NY)is now gone, just watch the news and find somewhere that looks like they are going to need help!
